Double Strollers Buying Guide

Parents of twins or kids with a year or two apart are left with no choice but to look at double strollers to make life easier for all parties concerned.

The first known stroller designed (which was originally intended to be pulled by a dog, goat or other working animal) was introduced by William Kent in 1733 and with improvement in both design and functionality over the period of years since then, strollers have never gone out of style and if anything, became an integral part of the baby accessory market.

A stroller from 1847 - thankfully they have come a long way since then!

Key decisions to make when choosing double strollers:

  • Seating design: There are primarily three types of strollers; tandem, side by side and one seated and one standing type.
  • Type: Lightweight, standard, jogging version, just prams or all- terrain. Based on the lifestyle, the parents can choose one among these types.
  • Dimensions and mass: Ergonomically designed strollers to suit physical stature should be chosen for comfortable usage. For example, based on the height of the parents, the distance of the handle above the ground should be determined for maximum comfort. Weight matters too because it has to be portable and foldable for storage.
  • Features: Fancy or functional? There are strollers for all occasions and purposes. In addition to the standard features you can also get multiple storage areas, rain sheets, more comfortable seats for kids and air filled tires.
  • Size of the stroller: Size is directly proportional to the size of the vehicle one owns. Care should be taken to buy ones that does not take up all the boot space or garage space, or one that does not fit at all of course!
  • Price: Based on the budget and usage, the price must be decided. It is better to avoid cheap ones as they tend wear out sooner rather than later.

Double jogging strollers

Double jogging strollers are the ones that were designed for the fitness fanatics. They are versatile and easy to push on any surface at jogging speed, but there are a few things that need to be kept in mind when buying a double jogging stroller:

  1. Weight capacity: The stroller should have the capacity to carry around not only the weight of the kids but all the pressure weight that is put on it while jogging.
  2. Child security: The kid’s seats should be comfortable, safe and secure.
  3. Design and features: The wheels should be larger, suspension systems and shock absorbers should be present too.

InStep Safari Swivel Wheel Double Jogger

These are great for parents who already have a fitness regime and would not want to alter it. Plus, these jogging strollers take away the worry of leaving kids at home.

The best rated double jogging strollers available in the market today are the InStep Safari Swivel Wheel Double Jogger and Schwinn Turismo Swivel Double Jogger.

The Instep Safari Swivel Wheel is a side by side stroller priced at $197.99, and has features like separate seats and shades, reclining seats, is fully foldable, does not take up much space, comes in attractive colors and has lock enabled swivel wheels which are easy to push while jogging.

The Schwinn Turismo Swivel Double Jogger is a side by side double stroller priced at $219.54 which is a discounted price at the time of writing. It is better rated for features like double cup trays, portability and the fact that it represents terrific value for money for being sturdy and durable.

Double strollers for infant and toddler

Buying strollers for infants and toddlers involves lots of things but safety is the most important among all. Side by side strollers are best when compared to tandem style since this allows the kids to play with each other.

It is also easier to feed them and keep them entertained, but look for lightweight and easy to fold and store double strollers in this category.

Graco DuoGlider LX Stroller

Tandem models have their own advantages like the fact that they are maneuverable in narrow places like malls, airports and other areas that draw a crowd or have tight spaces. Comfort and safety should be kept in mind too while choosing strollers for infants and toddlers.

The Mountain Buggy Duet Double Stroller is a side by side stroller, which is priced at $599.99. It is made up of high quality materials and is perfectly sized and easy to push around.

Perhaps the most popular is the Graco Duoglider LX stroller which is a tandem style stroller, comparatively cheaply priced at $149.98 with excellent features to boot. The back seat is slightly higher than the front giving room from the kid at the back to have a view.

You should aim to get at last 3 years of use out of these strollers at the absolute minimum. If in doubt seek advice from people who already own the product or consult consumer reviews.

When they are made out of cheap materials the ride will be uncomfortable for the kids and the double stroller will wear out prematurely.

Graco double strollers

Graco is considered the most popular brand in this industry. Almost all the strollers this company has made have been a hit among the parents.

Graco Quattro Tour Duo Stroller, Zurich

There are currently 8 types of double stroller available in the market. These are priced between $148 to maximum of around $300.

The strollers are good value for money, durable, comfortable and good to look at. The products are made up of high-quality materials ensuring that they last longer than the expected life if maintained well.

The Graco Quattro Tour Duo Stroller is a tandem stroller priced at around $239.99. It has cup holders, lots of storage space which is required to take 2 kids out, is easy to push around and can be converted into car seats, which obviously saves you a bit of money.

The Graco Ready2Grow Stand and Ride Stroller is priced at $193.77 discounted rate. As the name says, this is a stand and ride type, hence cannot be used for longer distances.

It is easy to assemble, light weight, has multiple riding options, large storage basket and easy to use. The only downside is that, the front seat is shallow and the kid in the front may fall forward too easily.

Best double strollers

The list is quite long and the very notion of a best double stroller is ambiguous at best. They can be named best based on the age of the kids, the lifestyle of the parents and the intended usage and money invested.

Bumbleride Indie Twin Double Stroller

The model 2011 Bumbleride Indie Twin Double Stroller is a side by side double stroller priced at a whopping $699. I’m happy to report though that the features justify the price tag.

Although this is not a jogger, it has 4 big air filled tires that make the ride easy on the children as well as the parents. It has SPF 45 rated canopy which is a huge bonus too.

This prevents the kids from getting burnt by the sun and keeps them cooler and happier for longer.

The handle is adjustable letting people with different heights use it comfortably. They come in lovely color patterns that are attractive as well as elegant.

Again, the Graco Duoglider is one among the best double strollers available in the market. Apart from the basic features in a stroller, this has great features like easy conversion into car seat, weight of less than 30 lbs, has canopies and visors, bleacher seats and flat folding rear seats to allow kids to sleep comfortably.

They also have parent friendly featurs like storage, cup holders and true one hand operation.

From wood or wicker with brass joints to aluminum, plastic, cloth and rubber, double strollers have evolved significantly satisfying the ever rising needs of parents and kids in the modern age.
